VDPA held three days refresher workshop on CRPD and consultation on Adequate Standard of Living (article 28) with board members and staff of VDPA.
We considered in small group about “What is DPO?” and “What is CRPD?”.
Also, we learned there is a lot of barriers for people with disability, .e.g Institutional barriers, Environmental barriers, Attitudinal barriers and Information and communication barriers.
“Impairment + Barriers = Disability”
If there is no barriers, there is no disability anymore. We should continue to work towards achieving our vision which says” Building an accessible and inclusive Vanuatu for all individuals with disabilities, where they are empowered to actively participate in community on an equal basis with others.
And then, participants debated about social protection, particularly “Disability Allowance” on either all people with disabilities receive disability benefits or only people with high support needs benefit? Participants were divided in groups shared many cases about people with high supports needs in their own areas and islands.
At the end of the discussions Board members agreed and recommended that VDPA and other stakeholders to start advocating to the government to insert budget for Disability allowance and also Government to co fund VDPA.
Finally, participants came up with their action plans. We hope that every participant will implement their action plans. We believe that small steps add up to make a big difference.
